Mark Shenton (Sunday Express) and guests Kate Bassett (Independent on Sunday), Charles Spencer (Daily Telegraph) and Matt Wolf (International Herald Tribune) convene to assess Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (Adelphi), Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party (Menier Chocolate Factory), De Filippo’s Filumena (Almeida) and Errol John’s Moon on a Rainbow Shawl (National’s Cottesloe). We spend a lot of time moaning about how musical theatre is bad and there are all these jukebox shows and then something of this calibre turns up and, yes, some of casting isn’t great but it’s just a piece of work on a different level.
