Actor James Garnon talks about Pericles and more
in Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama
18th February 2016
INTERVIEW: JAMES GARNON. The actor talks to Judi Herman about his roles in Shakespeare’s late romances at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this season – the title role in Pericles, Prince of Tyre and the rogue Autolycus in The Winter’s Tale – and also about his close association with Shakespeare’s Globe, where he has appeared in new plays too, including Howard Brenton’s Anne Boleyn. Recorded at Shakespeare’s Globe, 11-02-2016.
“I don’t know of any play in which the gods are referred to as frequently. Pericles talks to them almost continually, so on the one hand I feel as if (in this part) I’m not interacting with the audience as much as normal but of course I’m not manipulating them in the same way that one might do in another space, but you’re constantly, once you cast them as the gods, imploring them to change the action on the stage, which they can’t do.”
