The director talks to Heather Neill about Shakespeare’s play, which is the Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank production at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. The project, from Globe Education, offers free tickets to a Shakespeare play for over 16,000 London state school students, aged 11-16, to support the teaching and learning of Shakespeare. It’s one thing to take all of Shylock’s money, but it’s the moment when he’s told to convert, his sense of identity is scrubbed out — the young people can’t bear that.
