SHAKESPEARE: KING LEAR
Legendary director Jonathan Miller returns to King Lear for the fifth time to direct a critically acclaimed production of the play for Northern Broadsides’ UK Tour with the company’s artistic director Barrie Rutter in the title role. He shares his thoughts on the play and more with Judi Herman — and ends by giving an impromptu masterclass on how to speak Shakespearian verse naturally – and on how to ‘eliminate verse’. Recorded on 25 March 2015 in London.
I think it’s the best of all Shakespeare’s plays. And it’s the easiest one in which to eliminate something which I find very disconcerting, which is verse. I simply want to hear people talking and that’s the only thing that ever interests me at all.
