in 20th-Century Drama, Actors and Performers, Directors, Regional Theatre
2nd April 2013
INTERVIEW: BARRIE RUTTER
The artistic director of Northern Broadsides theatre company talks to Judi Herman about his current role, starring in the touring production of Githa Sowerby’s Rutherford and Son (1912), directed by Jonathan Miller. He sets the play in the context of early twentieth century Northern drama, talks about being directed by Miller and about his long career, from the National Youth Theatre to Northern Broadsides. Recorded at Watford Palace Theatre, 27 March 2013.
When it opened at the Royal Court in 1912, it was an instant hit, and about a fortnight later, the Daily Telegraph reviewer found out that the playwright was female and he went back on his review. And he said something like “Women should not be concerning themselves with questions of society like this” And he damned her basically.
