The playwright talks to Aleks Sierz about his latest play, South Downs, which is currently on at the Harold Pinter Theatre as part of a double bill with Terence Rattigan’s The Browning Version (1948), and about his 2010 lecture, Mere Fact, Mere Fiction. John is quite innocent – he takes people at face value and he thinks that they mean what they say. Slowly, he comes to understand that everyone is performing, dissembling.
