RSC Special: director Phillip Breen on The Shoemaker’s Holiday
in Actors and Performers, Directors, Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama
13th February 2015
DIRECTOR’S TALK: PHILLIP BREEN
The director of the Thomas Dekker’s The Shoemaker’s Holiday (Royal Shakespeare Company) talks to writer and broadcaster Paul Allen about the contradictions of class, rags to riches and high heels. He also responds to audience questions about casting David Troughton in the role of Simon Eyre, and how Thomas Dekker and William Shakespeare write about the working class. Recorded in the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, 17 December 2014.
It’s not a rags to riches story… You’re born rich, you’re born poor, you get rich, you get poor, but it’s about what you do with it when you’ve got it.
