Shakespeare’s Globe: supremo Dominic Dromgoole on seasons past and to come
in Directors, Producers, Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama, Theatre Buildings
2nd October 2013
INTERVIEW: DOMINIC DROMGOOLE
The artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe looks back with Judi Herman over another extraordinarily successful and varied season, and forward to the excitement of a world tour of Hamlet, which aims to visit every country on the globe; and to the opening early next year of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, a new indoor space to be lit entirely by candlelight. Recorded at Shakespeare’s Globe, 2 September 2013.
There’s something alive and mysterious and substantial about real candlelight that you can’t get with anything else. So much else is a response to that candlelight, in terms of costume, the colours people wore, or the amount of bling they had on, or in terms of a ruff. A ruff is a lighting device; it’s there to light you from below.
