INTERVIEW: HOWARD DAVIES. One of the most respected directors in British theatre, Howard Davies passed away at the end of 2016. In this archive interview, he spoke to the critic Carole Woddis about his acclaimed production of Mikhail Bulgakov’s play The White Guard, one of a number of Russian classics he staged during his 27 years as an associate director at the National Theatre. Recorded at the National Theatre in 2010.
Russian plays have the same scale as the best American drama, and the same social commitment. I want to do plays about politics.
