WEST END REVIEW: NEW PLAYS SPECIAL
Mark Shenton (Sunday Express) and his guests David Benedict (Variety), Charles Spencer (Daily Telegraph) and Matt Wolf (International Herald Tribune) assess Alecky Blythe’s London Road (National Theatre), Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors (National Theatre) and Anya Reiss’s The Acid Test (Royal Court). Recorded: 18 June 2011.
One Man, Two Guvnors: this is Hytner at his very, very best. It’s like he’s just been let off the leash and on holiday. And James Corden who a lot of us felt rather dubious about – constantly publicity-seeking – gives this wonderful, warm-hearted, belching, funny, cordial performance. I just loved it and it’s going to be huge. It’s pay-day for Richard Bean at last.
